I was responsible for picking up daily design requests from editorial, design and technology teams across the BBC’s portfolio of audio and music websites e.g. BBC Radio 1, 1Xtra, Radio 2, Radio 3, Radio 4, Radio 5, Radio 5 Live, 5 Live Sports Extra, 6 Music, Radio 7, Asian Network and /Music.

How did it work?

Design requests were submitted in the form of tasks, which could be anything from designing a promo image to a complete minisite. Once assigned to a task, I would design according to the brief and timescale producing my own graphics, typographic styles and illustrations. I would seek feedback and sign off from the design team and the person that made the original request and hand these completed designs over to the developers to build.

Outcome

I had to simplify complex problems, processes and projects, coming up with creative solutions using existing or new ideas. I had to adopt a range of styles, tools and techniques appropriate to the audience and the nature of the information to get my message across.

I worked to tight deadlines, prioritising work and answering general queries on design principles. Through this I gained confidence and communication skills, influencing people and networks providing convincing design solutions to sell ideas.
