Background
The Mobile GEL guidelines are a reference point for all designers creating BBC websites for the mobile platform, and a continuation of the central GEL reference documentation. These rules, standards and considerations for use help create a consistent interaction and visual design across BBC mobile services.
What next...
I was lead designer on Mobile GEL, developing a set of standards and guidelines (taking into consideration the central GEL reference documentation) to create consistent interaction and visual design across BBC mobile services.
I presented work to key stakeholders (product owners, creative directors, project managers) across the business throughout the project, and represented the mobile team at the GEL working group. I worked alongside developers and the Frameworks team to help build working prototypes, testing design patterns and checking these work across a variety of different mobile devices, this helped me gain a greater understanding of the technical requirements when designing for mobile.
I was heavily involved in the setting up and briefing phase of testing the navigation and design patterns across the site. I lead kick-off meetings with the external agency to discuss the aims of the project and liased with them throughout the testing phase, providing them with everything they needed.
I acted as a consultant across UX&D to ensure mobile related projects (e.g. BBC Food, BBC Things To Do/ BBC Proms/ BBC Radio 4’s ‘Desert Island Discs’ and the BBC global toolbar project) took on elements of the Mobile GEL during it’s ‘work in progress’ stage.
Became a mobile contact/reference point for all UX&D designers creating BBC websites for the mobile platform. I am now part of the ‘Responsive design working group’, sharing my knowledge and design to benefit the business and help influence the work around the BBC.
